Birthday and Polo Fields

Weekend trips are the perfect way to break up our weeks, especially since each and every week there are forms to fill out, government offices to visit, and deliveries to wait for. Even with the thrill of receiving all of our things from Boston to our new home in Abu Dhabi, I planned a night away for Dr. H as it was his birthday (in fact today IS his birthday).

So off we went, past endless stretches of desert, sand, construction, and the obligatory camel. Suddenly, past downtown Dubai on the way to Oman we came across a huge stretch of green – trees, flowers, and grass.

“There must a river or something down there.” stated Dr. H.

No, no river, just lots of people watering the grounds and we drove into an oasis, away from the city, away from the sky scrapers, away from the world’s tallest building, and into the Desert Palm, which is at the Dubai Polo Club. It was not until that moment that I realized just how much I miss the smell and sight of green – most notably in the form of gorgeous grassy polo fields.

We were surrounded by green everywhere, and of course provided with places to sit and just watch the grass grow. This was something I could probably have done all day

A drive by the stable made us feel we might be in Mexico or Spain with the flowers and small decorative pieces that surrounded the barns

But we were not there for the polo fields, the benches, or the stables. No, we were there to celebrate a birthday. So maybe even better that all of the green that surrounded us was breakfast and the sweet simplicity of sharing another year in each others lives.
