A house does not necessarily make a home. What is in the house helps to create home and provide a sense of comfort and being. Yesterday we received everything that we shipped from Boston to Abu Dhabi. Basically, our home. When we were packing up several months ago, I remember the exhaustion, the sense of wanting to just let go of it all and be free of “stuff”. We let a lot of it go. We sold most of the furniture and gave about 1/3 of our clothes to GoodWill. We also left the larger items (kitchen appliances) in storage.
It had been months, and we could hardly remember everything that we packed. Sure, we knew that dozens of boxes contained books, our kitchen tools, pots, and pans. But what else???
When I started opening the boxes I realized the little things we shipped over, the small items that I perhaps once overlooked, made me realize that, we finally had a home…
Hats to keep off the sun and put on for an elegant evening out
A small tray to collect keys or change
An ornament to place on a tree when the holidays come
A set of tea cups from the South of France to end dinner with new friends
Yes, Dr. H & I are starting to feel that we have a home. Oh, and we also have a guest room with a bed, clean sheets, and towels to welcome all of our friends we miss everyday into our new home. You all know who you are…
