Love, Marriage, and Holding On

We have learned a lot over the years about holding on – holding on tight. Sometimes you hold on so tightly to things that you have to let them go, even though you do not want to. Other times, the tighter you hold on, the better you feel. It is all a precarious balancing act, and sometimes you end up falling. The falling part hurts, and sometimes the pain is unbearable. However when you have someone by your side who is there to pick you up or even keep you from falling, it hurts less, and it all becomes more bearable. And that is what love and marriage and holding on is all about.

This Marriage

-Rumi

May these vows and this marriage be blessed.
May it be sweet milk,
this marriage, like wine and halvah.
May this marriage offer fruit and shade
like the date palm.
May this marriage be full of laughter,
our every day a day in paradise.
May this marriage be a sign of compassion,
a seal of happiness here and hereafter.
May this marriage have a fair face and a good name,
an omen as welcomes the moon in a clear blue sky.
I am out of words to describe
how spirit mingles in this marriage.
