Shopping in Sharjah

I am not one to jump at the opportunity to go shopping – really, I am not. But we are now faced with furnishing a home. While some of our belongings will be arriving from the States in about a month, we have no where near enough “stuff” to furnish our home. Sure, we could go to the Abu Dhabi Ikea, and truth be told, we might for some basic items. However, we heard whispers about some hidden furniture stores and local souks in the Emirate of Sharjah.

Sharjah is north of Abu Dhabi, just past Dubai. Luckily for us, we went with someone who lives in the area, which helped navigating through the streets and traffic. We stumbled across a wonderful place that warehouses filled with hand carved furniture from India – there were pieces for the bedroom, living room, dining room, and office. Old armoirs and bookcases sat side by side and dozens of doors were stacked neatly in another rooms. Wherever we looked were pieces, each more breathtaking than the next.

The owner told us that once we decided on what we wanted, they would treat the pieces, polish them, and prepare them for us. As Dr. H and I have been looking for an old door to turn into a dining room table, we knew instantly that we found our place. My mind starting racing as I saw matching end table, coffee table, side table… the list goes on.

We held back however, and decided to wait until everything was confirmed with the house until we went full force ahead with the furniture. I don’t think that it would be very smart to be sitting on a fabulous bed in the middle of the desert – we do need a proper home to put it all in.

We then went to the souk and came across lights that would make our home warm and inviting

Vases into which we could pour cool water or place a single flower and place by a guests bedside table

And plates on which we could serve our guests who are seated at the table we end up buying when we have a home

But at the very end of the day, I only came away with a few scarves. We are going back however, for the furniture and hopefully the rest will soon follow.
