Unexpected Events

While driving down the highway today just outside of Abu Dhabi, I noticed a rather large sign. It basically said to BE PREPARED FOR UNEXPECTED EVENTS.

OK???

I wanted to stop and take a photo, but seeing as how I was on the highway in the UAE, I did not think that was the best idea. Instead I looked around. There was desert and date trees as far as I could see. I tried to conjure up all sorts of ideas about what sorts of events might be unexpected.

Perhaps the fact that I just filled up the gas tank for $16USD? That ended up being a rather unexpected event.

Or maybe the fact that I just spent 40 minutes in a mobile phone customer service center trying to understand how much it cost per minute when I made local calls ,and the service woman was unable to answer- maybe that was an unexpected event? I mean one might expect someone who works in a customer service center to be able to respond to such questions. But no bother, she clearly was unable to provide that level of service. I asked her what kind of services the office did provide. She explained they could accept payments for bills. I asked since they were a service center, could she tell me where the closest gas station might be?

No, she could not.

Luckily, a very nice local man bent over backwards to tell me I needed to drive to Shahama – it was on the highway towards Dubai. One of the exits off the highway stood my new favorite sign of unexpected events.

I think it is important to keep the sign in mind whether or not you happen to be on a highway, as they do happen for better or worse.

Happy 4th of July to everyone back home in the States!
